The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), through the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), has notified 17 online betting companies to provide detailed information within 10 days about advertising, bonuses, and restrictions on access by minors and vulnerable individuals.
Online betting has been growing, and with it, reports of addiction to gambling. As these companies offer bonus deals to bettors, the investigation is based on the fact that this advantage encourages players to bet more and goes against the legislation.
The purpose of the measure is to prevent pathological gambling, especially among minors and vulnerable consumers.
The notified companies must clarify how the bonuses work and the operations to prevent the participation of children and adolescents in betting, as well as consumers at risk.
Within the stipulated timeframe, all must explain their advertising policies, monitoring systems, and debt prevention, and how it works (if there is) the blocking to prevent bets considered irresponsible to these audiences.
The Consumer Defense Code establishes that consumer protection is a fundamental principle of the economic order and transparency in consumer relations.
“It is essential that betting companies have a clear communication policy about the risks associated with gambling. The consumer has the right to make informed decisions, informed about the real chances of winning and the risks,” says Vitor Hugo do Amaral, director of the Department of Consumer Defense.
