The National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force warns of a surge in cases where Sri Lankan citizens are being sent to cyber scam parks in Myanmar.
The task force states that recent reports indicate that Sri Lankan citizens, especially those residing in the UAE, are becoming targets of human trafficking. They are falsely promised high-paying jobs, particularly in the IT sector.
According to the latest investigations, traffickers lure IT professionals with the prospect of attractive overseas job opportunities.
Victims are taken to places like Dubai for supposed interviews, then transported to Myanmar where they are forced to engage in cybercrime. Detainees face mental and brutal physical torture, including electric shocks.
The task force urges the public to exercise caution, avoid seeking employment abroad on tourist visas, and only accept positions through officially sanctioned overseas institutions.
- Use legal channels only: Ensure employment migration is handled through licensed institutions.
- Stay vigilant: Report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
- Protect vulnerable groups: If you know any Sri Lankan workers or overseas workers in similar situations who might be at risk, inform the relevant authorities.
