The Ministry of Sports, through the new National Secretariat of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, has notified the Ministry of Justice and Public Security about dozens of accounts and YouTube channels that promote online betting with promises of quick earnings, without warning about the risks. The investigation revealed 53 accounts and 25 channels that attract more than 100,000 viewers per broadcast, using promises of easy profit.
Digital influencers are pointed out as key pieces in this scheme, giving a semblance of legitimacy to the fraudulent practices.
The Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, highlighted that “thousands of Brazilians, deceived by promises of easy gain, end up being victims of fraud”.
He emphasized the need for regulation of sports betting to ensure transparency and security for the population.
The research also suggests the existence of a parallel market, where influencers, advertisers, and developers financially benefit.
The National Secretariat of Sports Betting reported that the sites promoted by the influencers receive the money from the bettors, but do not pay out the promised prizes, deactivating the pages and disappearing with the investments.
Giovanni Rocco, Secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, warned that these sites hide on social networks to perpetrate scams.
He stated that the promises of quick gains are not bets, but rather crimes against the popular economy, deceiving people who seek to supplement their income.
