IGT has become the latest company in the gaming industry to suffer a cyber attack. The company announced yesterday that unauthorized third parties had breached some of its systems, causing disruptions to certain functionalities of its internal information technology systems and applications.
IGT stated that the company is "communicating appropriately with customers and other stakeholders, and where possible, implementing alternative solutions for some business operations based on the business continuity plan to minimize disruptions and continue serving customers."
This incident is one of a series of high-profile cyber attacks that have targeted suppliers and operators in the gaming industry in recent years. One of the most notable was an attack on MGM Resorts International in October 2023, which resulted in thousands of slot machines going offline, as well as disruptions to ATMs, payment systems, and other systems within the property. Reports indicate that some hotel guests were unable to access their rooms due to malfunctioning room cards.
In November 2023, Okada Manila in the Philippines also reported "technical issues" with its "information technology systems," leading to the paralysis of most slot machines and affecting other systems for several months.
Similarly, in August 2023, global gaming supplier Aristocrat revealed that it had been the victim of a cyber attack, with employee personal information being stolen and some of the information even being made public.
Additionally, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore reported a data breach in November 2023, affecting the personal data of approximately 665,000 customers.
