The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported that the total gaming revenue in October 2024 was $496.6 million, a 2.81% increase year-over-year.
While digital gaming forms such as iGaming and online sports betting performed strongly, the traditional retail sector showed mixed results.
Retail slot machine revenue grew by 4.21% to $200.6 million, becoming the largest contributor to the total gaming revenue in October.
Leading casinos include Parx Casino, with revenue of $31.3 million (+3.38%), and Wind Creek Bethlehem, with revenue of $23.4 million (+7.65%). However, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course saw a decline of 8.61%, earning $10.4 million.
Online casino games saw significant growth, with total revenue reaching $189 million, up 22.10%. iGaming slot revenue was $140.9 million (+28.26%), while table games grew by 7.76% to $45.9 million.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course led with $69.4 million (+11.63%), followed by Valley Forge Casino Resort, which earned $51.9 million (+46.63%).
Table game revenue fell by 9.28% to $73.9 million. Despite significant revenue drops, Wind Creek Bethlehem ($18.1 million, -11.1%) and Parx Casino ($14.7 million, -13.85%) remained major revenue sources.
Sports betting taxable revenue significantly decreased by 43.15% to $27.4 million. Total betting volume slightly increased to $858.1 million (+3.52%), but a lower win rate led to reduced revenue.
Valley Forge Casino Resort maintained a leading position, earning $17.3 million, down 4.78%.
Compliance and Enforcement Actions
PGCB imposed fines of $70,000 on two video gaming terminal (VGT) operators for violating regulatory requirements. TA Operating and Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores both failed to ensure a licensed employee was present during VGT operations at their respective locations.
Additionally, 17 individuals were added to PGCB's involuntary exclusion list, including five customers who left minors unattended in vehicles while gambling.
Prominent cases involved children left in vehicles for durations ranging from five minutes to over seven hours, highlighting the dangers and legal consequences of such actions.
Past News
October's performance aligns with trends observed earlier in 2024. In July, Pennsylvania reported a revenue increase of 7.22%, driven by iGaming and sports betting, while retail slots and table games saw declines.
These shifts reflect national trends, with digital platforms increasingly becoming key revenue drivers.
Operators like Valley Forge Casino Resort have benefited from this digital transformation, reporting a significant revenue increase (+25.61%) to $80.9 million in October. Conversely, Hollywood Casino at the Meadows experienced a sharp decline of 37.05%, highlighting the varied fortunes within the state's gaming industry.
Outlook
The continued growth of online gaming in Pennsylvania, along with PGCB's focus on compliance, positions the state for sustained performance. However, the traditional gaming sector still faces challenges and may need innovative strategies to stabilize revenue.
PGCB will hold its next meeting on December 18, 2024, where further insights into regulatory measures and industry trends will be discussed, as the state plans to end the year with record gaming revenues.
