Live horse racing is officially coming to Laramie County in 2025 after the Wyoming Gaming Commission gave the green light Friday for Thunder Plains Park, operated by Cowboy Racing LLC, to host racing events beginning in August.

Located about 10 miles east of Cheyenne, the track will be the state’s first and only full-size horse racing track. The mile-long oval track will be 80 feet wide at its narrowest, wide enough to accommodate 12 horses racing at once.

Cowboy Racing has already invested more than $6 million in the track, as they had to move around 376,000 cubic yards of dirt to make it possible.

Although the racing company initially hoped to begin holding races last month, the Gaming Commission found their ambitious timeline incomplete when they sought approval in July.
