The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) of Thailand recently conducted large-scale raids in several areas of Chiang Mai Province, exposing alleged smuggling of frozen pork and the operation of illegal gambling websites.
According to Thai media, Colonel Yuthana Phraedam, the director of the DSI, led the team with four search warrants issued by the Chiang Mai Provincial Court. The searches were conducted at four houses and businesses located in San Sai Noi District, Saraphi District, and Mueang District to investigate cases suspected of smuggling pork and chicken parts.
The primary targets of the investigation included two key locations:
1. The headquarters of P Limited Company in San Sai District of Chiang Mai Province;
2. The branch office of P Limited Company in Saraphi District of Chiang Mai Province.
During the searches, the investigation team found container receipts transported from Laem Chabang Port to the company, including frozen pork carcasses and related documents. However, since these goods had all been sold, no physical evidence was found at the scene.
Additionally, two residences located in Patan Town of Mueang District, Chiang Mai (lanes 4/2 and 4/3 of Sri Lanna Road), were identified as document storage sites for the frozen pork smuggling operation.
However, the search results showed that these houses did not contain any evidence related to smuggling, but instead exposed other illegal activities.
It was reported that these residences were rented for the operation of illegal online gambling centers, involving online football betting, slot machines, roulette, and baccarat among other gambling activities.
The police and the special investigation team jointly seized a large amount of equipment and evidence during the operation, including over 20 laptops, about 50 mobile phones, and more than 5,000 unactivated prepaid SIM cards, all of which were confiscated as evidence for further investigation.
Currently, the DSI is actively pursuing the individuals and organizations involved in smuggling and online gambling. This case not only highlights the rampant smuggling and illegal gambling in the Chiang Mai area but also exposes new forms of cybercrime.
The police are calling on the public to assist by providing information to quickly bring the suspects to justice.
