The Social Action Box has already detected 150 illegal online betting sites while regulation is awaited in the Legislature.

Argentina.- Expectations are growing in San Juan regarding the regulation of online gambling that could be approved in the Legislature before the end of the year, while, in parallel, the provincial gaming regulatory body struggles to eradicate sites that operate illegally.

The president of the Social Action Box (CAS), Juan Pablo Medina, told the local media Diario Huarpe, that a division to fight illegal gambling was created and that 150 illegal online betting sites in San Juan have already been detected.

Despite this, the official indicated that today he does not have the tools to combat them and that is why a bill was presented to allow countering them. He also mentioned in the Café de la Política that there was consensus among all political actors for it to be approved as quickly as possible.

Medina explained the work they do from the agency to eradicate illegal gambling: “In the Box we created two divisions, one for social responsibility and responsible gambling and the other for fighting against illegal gambling. At this moment, the second division is working on detecting these online sites and they have already identified 150 sites that operate in San Juan, but we cannot move forward due to the lack of regulations that allow us to do so”.

Regarding the bill that is advancing in the Legislature to regulate the activity, the official said: “The law that creates the Social Action Box regulates and controls physical sites. The problem is that since the pandemic began, virtual clandestine games that reach young people have proliferated, leaving them at the mercy of the unscrupulous who evade controls”.

This bill aims to establish a legal framework that allows the creation of regulated betting sites, with specific restrictions for minors. “That is why we presented a law so that in the future there will be legal sites with minor restrictions and that can be controlled, in addition to having the full force of the law to combat the clandestine and illegal ones,” Medina concluded in his interview with the San Juan newspaper.
