Ho Chi Minh City — Vietnamese police have dismantled a large network organizing illegal immigration and gambling activities between Vietnam and Cambodia.
Police in An Giang province in the south confirmed on Friday that they had arrested two Vietnamese citizens, 34-year-old Lê Phước Lương and 39-year-old Nguyễn Việt Phương, both from An Giang province, who assisted several Cambodians in illegally entering Vietnam.
Following the arrest of his accomplices, another man, 52-year-old Võ Văn Sơn, voluntarily surrendered to the authorities and admitted his involvement in the operation.
The provincial police stated that the network's members facilitated the cross-border movement of a large number of gamblers over an extended period, causing great public concern.
They detained these individuals as part of an ongoing investigation into their organization of illegal immigration activities.
The authorities encourage any individuals related to this operation to come forward for lenient legal treatment.
The issue of illegal border crossing between Vietnam and Cambodia has been a concern for many years.
In March this year, Vietnam received over 100 citizens who were arrested and deported by Cambodian authorities for suspected gambling activities.
According to the Khmer Times, in March, Cambodian authorities raided the Paradise Island Casino, arresting and deporting 172 foreigners, including over 100 Vietnamese nationals.
