The Spanish Gambling Authority (DGOJ) has announced the results of the country's online gambling market for the third quarter of 2024.

Overall, the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) for this quarter was 348.1 million euros ($366.5 million), a year-on-year increase of 14.4% and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 0.5%. Of this, 188 million euros (54%) came from casinos, 135.9 million euros (39.1%) from betting, 20.5 million euros (5.9%) from poker, and the remaining 3.7 million euros (1.1%) from bingo games. There was no revenue from competitions this quarter.

There are currently 77 licensed operators in Spain.

Casinos

Spain's 51 casinos saw a total gaming revenue increase of 17.3% year-on-year and 9.5% quarter-on-quarter. Year-on-year, blackjack gaming revenue saw the most significant increase, growing by 49.4%, slot machine gaming revenue increased by 25.8%, and live roulette gaming revenue grew by 4.7%. However, the quarter-on-quarter growth in slot machine gaming revenue was just slightly higher than that of blackjack, with slot machine gaming revenue increasing by 13.7% and blackjack by 12.4%.

Betting

Spain currently has 42 licensed betting operators. Although vertical betting occupies nearly 40% of the market share, total betting revenue decreased by 6.6% quarter-on-quarter, but year-on-year, vertical betting is one of the fastest-growing areas in Spain, with an increase of 19.8%. Quarter-on-quarter, pre-match betting decreased by 24.3%, horse racing betting decreased by 22%, while in-play and other betting revenues increased, growing by 8.7% and 20.9% respectively.

Poker

The total revenue (GGR) from poker games decreased both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, by 19.7% and 23.5% respectively. This was mainly due to a decrease in poker tournament GGR, which fell by 29% quarter-on-quarter and 27% year-on-year. Cash poker also decreased year-on-year by 13.7%, but increased quarter-on-quarter by 15.4%.

Bingo

Finally, bingo games saw both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth, although much smaller compared to other verticals. Year-on-year, bingo GGR grew by 0.7%, and quarter-on-quarter growth was 1.7%.

Deposits and Withdrawals, New Accounts, and Marketing

Player deposits increased by 23.9% year-on-year and 4.6% quarter-on-quarter, with withdrawals showing a similar trend, increasing by 30.3% year-on-year and 7.4% quarter-on-quarter. Total deposits reached 1.14 billion euros, with total withdrawals amounting to 802.2 million euros.

A total of 459,543 new accounts were opened this quarter (an average of 153,181 per month), an increase of 1.7% from the previous quarter and 42.4% from the same period last year. The current number of active online gaming accounts is estimated to be 1.44 million, a third more than the same period last year.

Marketing expenses reached 131.7 million euros, a year-on-year increase of 40.9%; this growth rate is nearly the same as that of new player accounts compared to the same period last year. Of this, 13.2 million euros were spent on affiliate fees, 1.3 million euros on sponsorships, 66.8 million euros on promotions, and 50.4 million euros on advertising. Both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, all these figures reflect growth, with year-on-year growth in each marketing vertical ranging from 40% to 52% (with affiliate fees in bars growing by 13.7%).
