Online gaming in Spain: the industry reported a 14% year-on-year growth in the third quarter

Online gaming revenues in Spain exceeded EUR348m between July and September.

Spain.- Online gaming in Spain shows sustained growth quarter by quarter and is emerging as one of the rising modalities among bettors in the Iberian country. This is reflected in the state online gaming market report for the third quarter of 2024.

According to the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), in July, August, September, the GGR was EUR348.09m. This represents an increase of 0.49 percent over the previous quarter and 14.4 percent over the same quarter in 2023.

Other main magnitudes, deposits and withdrawals by players, increased their variation rates compared to the previous year by 23.87 percent and 30.32 percent respectively. Compared to the previous quarter, deposits increased by 4.62 percent and withdrawals by 7.37 percent. Marketing spending experienced an increase of 9.70 percent from the previous quarter and new accounts increased by 1.66 percent.

The variations compared to the same quarter of the previous year are collected in Table 1:

The EUR348.09m of GGR are distributed in EUR135.92m in Betting (39.05 percent); EUR3.67m in Bingo (1.05 percent); EUR187.99m in Casino (54.01 percent), EUR0.00m in Contests (0.00 percent) and EUR20.52m in poker (5.89 percent).

The betting segment reported a decrease rate compared to the previous quarter of -6.57 percent and a growth rate of 19.76 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Conventional counterpart sports betting decreased by -24.26 percent while live betting increased by 8.74 percent compared to the previous quarter. Other counterpart bets increased by 20.88 percent and counterpart horse racing bets decreased by -22.03 percent.

The bingo experienced a growth of 1.71 percent compared to the previous quarter and 0.67 percent compared to the same quarter of 2023.

In the casino segment there was a growth of 9.45 percent compared to the second quarter of 2024 and an annual variation rate of 17.30 percent. This annual growth occurred in slot machines with 25.80 percent, Black Jack with 49.39 percent and in live roulette 4.68 percent. Compared to the previous quarter, their rate increased conventional roulette by 7.01 percent, live roulette by 0.63 percent, slot machines by 13.69 percent and Black Jack by 12.38 percent.

The contests in this quarter presented very small GGR data and amounts played.

The poker presented this third quarter of 2024 a decrease of -19.73 percent compared to the previous quarter and -23.47 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, cash poker increased by 15.42 percent and tournament poker decreased by -28.99 percent. The annual variation rates were negative by -13.68 percent in cash poker and -27.02 percent in tournament poker.

The percentage distribution of GGR in the different segments in the third quarters of the period 2021 to 2024 is collected in Table 2:

The marketing expenditure in the quarter was EUR131.66m, broken down into affiliation expenses EUR13.16m; sponsorship EUR1.26m; promotions EUR66.84m; and advertising EUR50.40m. Compared to the previous quarter, this expenditure increased by 9.70 percent and an annual variation of 40.90 percent. Compared to the previous quarter; sponsorship grew by 4.49 percent; promotions by 7.70 percent, advertising by 14.62 percent and affiliates by 2.96 percent. Compared to the previous year, sponsorship increased by 44.50 percent, affiliates by 13.71 percent, promotions by 40.18 percent and advertising by 51.28 percent. In this quarter, the promotions were broken down into bonuses released in prizes EUR21.21m and not included in prizes EUR45.63m.

The average monthly active gaming accounts was 1,443,615, which implies a growth of 3.02 percent compared to the previous quarter and an annual variation of 33.33 percent. The average monthly new accounts was 153,181 users, with a quarterly increase of 1.66 percent and an annual rate of 42.40 percent.
