The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, stated that "there was a mistake in not legalizing gambling in Brazil, preferring instead to approve sports betting which brought the casino into people's homes." According to him, physical establishments, which generate employment and tourism, should have been allowed before bets. "The potential addiction that websites produce needs to be combated by the State," he added.
Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) expressed this in an interview with Senators Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) and Leila Barros (PDT-DF), on the PODK Liberados podcast, broadcasted on RedeTV! and YouTube on Sunday night, 24.
"Many people are losing control, getting addicted to betting. This needs to be addressed by the Brazilian State", the Senate President evaluated.
"There was a mistake in national policy by not legalizing gambling in Brazil, preferring to approve sports betting that brought the casino into people's homes", he said.
Regarding the manipulation of sports game results, especially in football, he also highlighted the need to prevent the destruction of the sport, which he considers a "national asset".
"I defend the thesis that, even with these ideas, if we do not resolve these sports bets we need to consider prohibiting them", Pacheco stated. "It's a long discussion, but something needs to be done. We must act urgently on the issue, with limitations to ward off these evils. I consider this a great challenge we have, as to decide whether we will legalize it or not".
On several occasions, the Senate President has expressed support for the approval of PL 2234/2022, which legalizes casinos, bingos, and the animal game in Brazil. The project has already been approved by the most important committee of the House, the Constitution and Justice Committee, and is waiting for his decision to go to the Plenary.
According to Senator Irajá (PSD-TO), who reported on PL 2234/2022, the project has passed through the committees and is ripe for voting. According to him, President Rodrigo Pacheco has already expressed interest in bringing it to the Plenary this year and is confident of its approval.
