A local community board is set to block the latest massive development proposal for the Western Rail Yards at Hudson Yards.
Manhattan Community Board 4’s (MCB4) Clinton Hell’s Kitchen Land Use Committee voted unanimously to reject zoning changes that would allow for a largely commercial development — including a proposed resort and casino — on Manhattan’s West Side, telling the developer the neighborhood’s priority is creating more housing.
Early this year Related Companies revealed its revised $12 billion plans for the Western Rail Yards, the land to the west of Hudson Yards (bw W31/33rd St and 11/12th Ave) — which included 4,000 fewer housing units than the developer had agreed to in 2009 — in favor of more office development and a Wynn resort and casino (which is subject to a separate review process). According to the developer, the mostly residential 2009 plan is no longer economically viable.
