According to a survey conducted by the Central Bank of Brazil, from January to August this year, Brazilians spent an average of about 20 billion reais per month on online gambling sites.
The Brazilian "G1" website reported that data from the Central Bank shows that about 24 million Brazilians participated in online gambling in the first eight months of this year, and each person made at least one transfer through the payment software Pix.
The Central Bank pointed out that the ages of online gambling bettors in Brazil vary, but most are concentrated between the ages of 20 and 30. In addition, the amount of money these people spend on online gambling sites each month increases with age, with young people spending an average of about 100 reais per month, while older people spend an average of over 3000 reais per month.
It is reported that as early as 2018, fixed-odds gambling was legalized in Brazil, but most gambling sites operate in other countries and provide services to Brazilians via the internet. As a result, at the end of last year, the Brazilian Congress approved a law to regulate the online gambling market, which involves taxation standards for the industry.
According to the new regulations, starting from January 2025, only online gambling sites that comply with Brazilian regulations will be able to legally operate within Brazil, in order to allow the government to manage uniformly.
"We can fully grasp who the bettors are and what payment methods they use. We will establish very clear anti-money laundering regulations," said Régis Dudena, Director of the Brazilian Treasury's Prizes and Gambling Bureau, in an interview.
Dudena also pointed out that these new regulations will also protect bettors, allowing them to understand the amount of money they invest in the gambling market and to supervise it.
