In its first full year, sports betting generated approximately $6 million in revenue for the state of Maine, with December figures still pending, according to Maine’s Gambling Control Unit.

The year is expected to end strong as the new college football playoff format kicks off Friday.

Milton Champion, executive director of Maine’s Gambling Control Unit, said football-related wagers have been especially popular. He anticipates December will surpass last year’s figures and said that overall, he’s pleased with how things have gone over the past year.

“Originally, when the bill came through, it was projected to be between $3.8 million and $6.9 million, so we’re right in the middle of that, so it’s good,” Champion said.
