The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police recently raided a call center in Lalitpur's Satdobato, arresting 53 individuals, including two Indian nationals, on charges of illegal online gambling activities.
The police seized 85 laptops and 82 mobile phones, used as tools for operating online casinos. CIB spokesperson Hobindra Bogati stated that the suspects have been detained, and the police will apply for an extension of the detention period to further investigate.
This operation reflects the Nepal Police's focus on the increasingly severe threat of cybercrime. Earlier this month, the CIB issued a notice warning the public to be aware of scams spread through social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram.
Scammers often impersonate banks or financial institutions, committing fraud by obtaining sensitive information like one-time passwords (OTP), leading to financial losses.
The police urge the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages, avoid disclosing personal sensitive information, and promptly report suspicious activities to local law enforcement agencies to jointly combat cybercrime.
