On January 20th, local time, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order at the White House, declaring that children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants or those holding temporary visas will no longer automatically receive U.S. citizenship.
According to the executive order, children whose mothers are illegally residing in the U.S. and whose fathers are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents at the time of the child's birth, as well as children whose mothers are legally residing in the U.S. on a temporary basis (such as holding a student, work, or tourist visa) and whose fathers are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents at the time of the child's birth, will no longer automatically receive U.S. citizenship.
The U.S. has long granted automatic citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil based on the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. However, this executive order by Trump reinterprets the concept of "jurisdiction" within the 14th Amendment, attempting to change this long-standing practice.
