According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), the betting activities for the 2024 major competition set a new record, with the total national betting amount reaching $23 billion. This reflects a sharp rise in the number of gambling participants across the United States.
Ohio also shows this trend, with its sports betting market revenue exceeding $1 billion in November, a year-on-year increase of 18.5%.
The Ohio Problem Gambling Network (PGNO) warns that this growing trend comes with risks, as more and more residents report gambling-related problems.
PGNO Executive Director Derek Longmeier said: "It's easy for people to gamble thousands of dollars with their smartphones. We need to understand the balance between fun and harm."
It is worth noting that responsible gambling data in Ohio shows that currently, 1.8 million Ohioans (19.8% of the state's adult population) are classified as low-risk, moderate-risk, or problem gamblers. This number has increased by 300% since 2012, consistent with the national trend of rising gambling disorders across multiple demographic groups.
With the growth of online sports betting, state government officials have reiterated the provision of problem gambling resources, including the "Pause Before You Play" campaign, encouraging individuals to limit the time and money spent on gambling.
Furthermore, the Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network has expanded its services to provide remote counseling for affected users.
The increase in sports betting activities is also reflected in industry trends. In November 2024, Delaware North announced a partnership with Playtech to move its Betly sports betting and casino platform to multiple states including Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
