Recently, the Thai government has implemented power cuts, internet shutdowns, and fuel supply stops in five border areas between Thailand and Myanmar to combat domestic and international telecommunications fraud and transnational criminal organizations.
The spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Thailand, Janjira, expressed her views, emphasizing that although this measure may not completely destroy the criminal groups, it is more effective than doing nothing. She also called for active cooperation from the Myanmar side to jointly combat telecommunications fraud crimes.
Janjira stated that although Thailand and Myanmar share a border line of more than 2,000 kilometers and have close economic exchanges, facing the severe threat of telecommunications fraud to the safety of the Thai people, the government must take decisive action.
She pointed out that for a long time, telecom fraud groups have been rampant in the region, causing repeated harm to the Thai people, while past government anti-fraud measures were mostly about prevention and lacked direct means to curb the source of crime.
Now, by cutting off electricity, fuel, and internet supplies, the government is putting pressure on criminal organizations, demonstrating a firm stance against transnational telecom fraud.
Regarding some Thai people's concerns about domestic involvement in transnational crimes, Janjira emphasized that to maintain government credibility, further internal investigations should be strengthened to ensure the complete elimination of anyone colluding with telecom fraud organizations.
Regarding the protests expressed by some Myanmar people due to the power and internet cuts, Janjira stated that the Thai government's stance will not waver, and combating crime remains the top priority. She emphasized that Thailand hopes to cooperate with neighboring countries to eradicate transnational criminal organizations and stated that Thailand would not take measures affecting neighboring countries unless absolutely necessary, but ignoring the issue would only exacerbate the rampant telecom fraud crimes.
Finally, she added that the government will continue to strengthen its efforts to combat crime, while looking forward to support from the international community and Myanmar to achieve regional security and stability.
