The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested a 44-year-old Chinese fugitive attempting to extend his tourist visa, highlighting the government's strict crackdown on foreign criminals hiding in the country.

The suspect, named Lin Guangxiu, was arrested on February 11 at the BI headquarters in Manila, after authorities confirmed he was wanted by Interpol for drug-related crimes.

According to reports, Lin Guangxiu was charged under Section 11 of Article II of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

"This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting the nation from foreign fugitives," said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Vidal. "The Philippines will not become a sanctuary for criminals. We will continue to ensure border security and ensure that those attempting to evade legal sanctions are arrested," he added.

During the visa extension process, BI personnel discovered irregularities in Lin's records and reported the case to Raymond Remigio, head of the Tourist Visa Section (TVS), who coordinated with the BI Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) and immediately arrested Lin.

"This case proves the effectiveness of our screening procedures," said Remigio. "We remain vigilant to prevent foreign fugitives from exploiting our immigration system."

Authorities stated that in 2019, Lin and his accomplices were found in possession of over 138 sealed transparent packets containing approximately 270,000 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or "ice."

Lin is currently detained at the BI facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, awaiting deportation proceedings.

His arrest aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s directive to strengthen border security and uphold the rule of law, ensuring that fugitives and other unwelcome foreigners are expelled from the country.

Vidal added, "We will continue to cooperate with international law enforcement agencies to apprehend fugitives and deport them immediately."

Vidal further warned that any foreigner attempting to evade legal sanctions would face immediate legal action.
