After Thailand's "three cuts": Online gambling and fraud gangs in Payathonsu, Myanmar "left the building deserted"

Thai journalists conducted an investigation in Phaya Tong Su, Myanmar, and found that the buildings previously rented by a Chinese telecom fraud gang were empty. Since the Thai government implemented the "cut electricity, internet, and fuel" measures on February 5, the situation has changed significantly.

According to the security department, this measure taken by the Thai government effectively forced the Chinese telecom fraud gang to leave Phaya Tong Su.

On February 9, Colonel Soe Wa, the second tactical commander of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), issued a notice requiring all Chinese telecom fraud gangs to move out of the area by February 28. Although this measure has caused troubles for more than 50,000 residents of Phaya Tong Su, it has achieved initial success in combating telecom fraud.

During the field investigation, it was found that several buildings in Phaya Tong Su, originally rented to the Chinese telecom fraud gang, had been emptied, and items such as communication equipment, electrical appliances, and air conditioners had been moved out. The members of the fraud gang had relocated to a new location about 10 kilometers away from the city.

In the past, these buildings brought the owners a monthly rent of 200,000 to 800,000 Thai Baht (approximately 43,000 to 172,000 RMB). Tenants usually renovated the houses and arranged for 200 to 300 people to live and work there, with Chinese workers responsible for food and 24-hour security, and the owners were not allowed to enter these places.

Furthermore, the journalist also investigated the market area of Phaya Tong Su, where many Chinese used to shop, but now it is deserted. Restaurants, barber shops, and arcades that were used to cover up the telecom fraud business have also been closed and moved out of the city. It is reported that there were more than 200 Chinese shops and venues involved in the area.

This change indicates that the Thai government's crackdown has begun to take effect, and the activities of the telecom fraud gangs have been significantly curbed.
