Senate Bill 2510, which passed the chamber 44-1 in favour, would criminalise internet sweepstakes casinos as a felony, punishable by a $100,000 fine and up to a decade in prison.

The proposed law comes as part of a wider pushback against the sites in several state legislatures across the country, coming on the back of new attention to the platforms in 2024.

The Senate’s passage of the bill is only the first legislative stage, and it would need to see green lights from both the House of Representatives and Governor’s Mansion to become law.
