Kansas, US, set a new record for sports betting handle in January.
The Kansas Lottery, the state’s gambling regulator, reported the latest total at US$301.8m, the first time the figure has breached the $300m mark in a single month.
Year-on-year, the figure was up 26 per cent from January 2024’s $239.6m and up 15.5 per cent from December 2024’s $261.3m.
The Sunflower State followed New York State’s mobile betting industry in setting a record for total wagers in January, although Kansas did not match the Empire State in setting a revenue record.
Sports betting revenue in Kansas in January was $16.2m, which failed to encroach too much on November 2023’s $25.5m.
Nevertheless, the figure was an improvement of 12.7 per cent from January 2024’s $14.3m and it showed month-on-month growth of 83.9 per cent from December 2024’s $8.8m.
With the tax revenue set at 10 per cent in Kansas, the percentage increases month-on-month and year-on-year were the same.
Tax revenue rose year-on-year from $1.4m to $1.6m and from $838,609 in December.
In the most recent month, mobile wagers accounted for $293.2m of handle, with retail wagers worth the remaining $8.6m.
Most of the revenue ($16m) came from mobile bets with retail bets contributing $128,386 in revenue.
