The Phnom Penh police launched a raid on a row house in Section 2 of Tuol Kork suburb, successfully dismantling a suspected illegal Chinese online gambling operation and arresting over 30 individuals involved, including citizens from China, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
According to local law enforcement, the police initiated the operation at dawn, during which some suspects attempted to escape by climbing over the rooftops of the row houses but were quickly spotted and subdued on the spot. The police emphasized that the company is suspected of multiple illegal detentions and fraud cases, and the raid was based on clues and intelligence provided by the victims' families.
The case originated from a report by a Vietnamese employee who initially thought he was hired to work in Bavet, but was instead taken to Phnom Penh and had his personal freedom restricted.
When he attempted to resign, the company's management not only refused to let him go but also prohibited him from going out and demanded his family pay a $2500 ransom. After locating the victim, his family immediately reported to the police.
Following the raid, the police escorted all individuals involved to the station for further investigation of their identities and involvement in the case. The case is currently under further review, and the suspects may face legal sanctions. The police remind the public to stay vigilant to avoid falling into similar scams and encourage victims to actively report to law enforcement.
