To combat illegal immigration, the Lusaka Immigration Department conducted coordinated raids on three well-known casinos, arresting 30 suspected illegal immigrants. The targeted casinos were Golden Galaxy, Monte Carlo, and Gen Long.
Immigration Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka confirmed the details of the raid and emphasized that this measure is part of the government's ongoing commitment to effectively combat illegal immigration. "The operations carried out in these casinos are part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring that all individuals residing in Zambia comply with the country's immigration laws," Nshinka said.
Among the 30 arrested, there were 11 Chinese, 8 Indians, 8 Cambodians, 1 Filipino, 1 Kazakhstani, and 1 Sri Lankan. Authorities stressed that regulating individuals' immigration status in the country is crucial for maintaining national security and legal compliance.
In the arrests, two suspects were particularly noted for violating immigration laws. A Chinese citizen was detained for having an expired work permit, while Cambodian citizen Koay Somaly was detained after his work permit application was rejected. These cases highlight the Immigration Department's commitment to enforcing the law, preventing individuals from overstaying or residing without proper documentation.
"The remaining 28 arrested individuals held valid immigration permits. They have been asked to proceed to the Immigration Headquarters for further immigration procedures," Nshinka added. In another development related to immigration enforcement, a joint team from the Immigration Department and police in Mpika made further progress by arresting two Tanzanian men suspected of aiding and abetting seven undocumented Ethiopian nationals.
