Adults who play competitive video games may soon be able to legally bet on themselves or their own team as New Jersey looks to expand sports wagering into what lawmakers see as a growing business.

“As we’re talking about opportunities to embrace an emerging industry, this is certainly one avenue for us to capitalize on [by] having the ability for the state to set that path forward to allow for wagering to occur,” said Assemblyman William F. Moen Jr. (D-Camden).

Moen is the primary sponsor of a bill that unanimously passed an Assembly committee last week that would allow the state Division of Gaming Enforcement to approve wagering on electronic sports — or esports — events occurring at physical facilities outside of New Jersey.
