A bill that would ban smoking in casinos passed out of the Iowa House Commerce Committee Tuesday.
Bill HSB148 would force casinos to adhere to the Smokefree Air Act, a law that protects employees and patrons from secondhand smoke. Casinos are currently exempted from this act.
Supporters of this bill claim that all workers have the right to a smokefree work environment. Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights urges legislators to pass the bill in order to protect worker’s health, safety, and to promote responsible gaming.
Those in opposition argue that the bill may harm business and cause a drop in gaming revenue.
