Hackers who claim to have stolen 100 gigabytes of confidential data are scolding an Upper Peninsula tribe for not negotiating with them.
The attack resulted in the temporary closure of Kewadin Casinos in Manistique, Christmas, Hessel, Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace. Reopening began today.
The hackers allegedly sent a letter to the editor of the Sault Tribe Guardian, which was published on Feb. 16, detailing its “side of the events.” The group claims to have made “multiple attempts” to contact the tribe to “resolve this situation,” but has not heard back from representatives of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
“The financial situation of the tribe is sufficient to cover the expenses associated with this cyberattack,” the hackers said. “The tribe’s failure to act raises serious questions about its leadership’s priorities and intentions regarding this matter.”
