The Malaysian government plans to allow travelers from 63 countries and regions, including long-term pass holders, to use the **QR Code Clearance System** starting from January 1, 2026, to enhance entry efficiency. This measure will significantly reduce the manual inspection process at immigration counters, making clearance more convenient for travelers.
According to multiple Malaysian media reports, the Minister of Home Affairs, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, stated during a parliamentary Q&A session on the 4th that the government has now opened the QR Code Clearance System for Malaysian citizens. Travelers with a Malaysian passport can download the MyBorderPass app, enter their passport information to generate a QR code, and pass through customs without having to show their passport or ticket.
The plan is expected to expand next year to include 63 countries and regions, including Singapore. Travelers only need to upload their passport information and photo in the MyBorderPass app, and the system will automatically record the relevant data and generate a QR code for clearance.
Saifuddin mentioned that using the QR code generated by MyBorderPass only takes about 5 seconds for clearance, and with automatic gates, the total clearance time can be reduced to about 15 seconds. This measure will significantly improve clearance efficiency and save on labor costs.
"Currently, the immigration department has deployed 172 officers at entry counters. With the QR code system going online, the number will be reduced to 68, which is a 60% reduction in manpower," emphasized Saifuddin. The system not only speeds up clearance but also optimizes the allocation of human resources in the immigration department.
This initiative is expected to attract more international travelers and further promote Malaysia as a hub for tourism and business. The government will conduct further tests before the official implementation to ensure the system operates smoothly.
