The Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police recently conducted a sting operation in Pasay City, successfully seizing a text message broadcaster from a former POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator) security personnel.
The police revealed that the device can send text messages to a large number of mobile numbers without the need for a SIM card, WiFi, or a database, and is often used for committing SMS fraud, phishing attacks, and other illegal activities.
In recent years, the text message broadcaster has become an important tool for fraud syndicates, using the device to send scam messages to unspecified victim groups, such as fake prize notifications and impersonating banks requesting personal information, severely threatening public property safety.
The police emphasized that they have strengthened the monitoring of similar devices and urged the public to be vigilant. If they encounter suspicious text messages, they should report them immediately to avoid being deceived. The case is still under further investigation, and the involved personnel may face corresponding legal responsibilities.
