The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission has announced the start of the license renewal process.
Puerto Rico.- After more than two years of legal limbo in the implementation of the law aimed at regulating slots on the island, the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission announced that last Tuesday, March 4, the license renewal process for Route Gambling Machine Operators (MAJAR) began. The revenue from slot machines will contribute to the Police Retirement System.
On January 22 of this year, the Gaming Commission presented Regulation Number 9647 to the Department of State, known as the Regulation for the issuance, management, and supervision of licenses for Route Gambling Machines. This regulation, adopted following Law No. 112 of 2024, which in turn amended Law No. 11 of 1933, received approval from the Fiscal Oversight Board (JSF) last December, thus allowing its implementation.
Juan Carlos Santaella Marchán, the acting director of the Gaming Commission, stated in a press release that the start of this process represents a crucial step in complying with the law that regulates the industry.
"With the renewal of the licenses for machine operators, we take the first step to combat illegality against those who do business freely in Puerto Rico through the Route Gambling Machine industry. Now, the Commission will be in a position to identify the machines and businesses that have the proper legal authorizations to operate and, in turn, can begin to remove from circulation those who evade their responsibility," said the official.
