OPINION: A casino at Florida’s Gulfstream Park without live racing would devastate families like mine

Letting Gulfstream Park retain its gaming licenses without a live horse-racing mandate delivers economic devastation and no benefit to Florida.

We must not compromise an industry that employs more than 33,000 people and maintains hundreds of thousands of acres of green space, particularly throughout scenic Ocala and Marion County. House Bill 105 and Senate Bill 408, which would end the requirement that horse tracks hold live races to have casino games, must be stopped for the good of the state.

Every horseman with a racing stable, breeding farm or training center operates a small business. Thousands of these labor-intensive operations are at risk if decoupling is approved to benefit one foreign company.
