A 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in central Myanmar, affecting multiple areas in Thailand and China. A construction building in Bangkok collapsed during the earthquake, leaving the fate of 43 construction workers unknown.
The Prime Minister of Thailand, Prayut Chan-o-cha, declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at 12:50 PM local time today (28th). The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing City with a depth of only 10 kilometers, making it a shallow earthquake.
The earthquake's intensity measured by the China Earthquake Networks Center was 7.9 magnitude.
The earthquake was powerful, felt in northern Thailand and the capital Bangkok. Many Bangkok residents rushed to the streets in panic, some rail and light rail services were suspended, and the water in high-rise infinity pools spilled over like waterfalls.
According to multiple media reports, the construction building that collapsed was located in the famous tourist area Chatuchak, and was 30 stories high. Reports indicate that there might be 43 construction workers buried.
Myanmar authorities have not yet reported any casualties or property damage. However, according to AFP, the earthquake caused damage to several roads and buildings in the capital Naypyidaw.
