The death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar continues to rise, with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing stating that at least 144 people have died so far.
Min Aung Hlaing said in a speech broadcast on Myanmar media that the earthquake that occurred today (28th) in central Myanmar has resulted in 144 deaths and 732 injuries.
The isolated military government's top leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, has rarely called for international assistance.
Min Aung Hlaing delivered a national television speech on Friday (March 28th) evening, warning that the death toll may continue to rise. He also invited countries around the world to provide humanitarian aid to Myanmar.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 12:50 on Friday (06:20 GMT) Yangon time, with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, centered 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing city in central Myanmar, near the country's second-largest city Mandalay, and about 100 kilometers from the capital Naypyidaw. The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers.
The earthquake was felt in extensive areas of Yunnan, China, and Thailand, where a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok collapsed, with hundreds missing and victims already found at the site.
