The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified the severe earthquake in Myanmar as the highest level of emergency and urgently called for the raising of 8 million US dollars to provide medical aid and prevent disease transmission over the next 30 days.
According to reports, the earthquake has caused more than 1700 deaths in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, injured 3400 people, and over 300 are missing. The WHO pointed out that due to the limited medical system in Myanmar, a large number of injured people are at risk of infection, and the post-disaster environment may exacerbate the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera and dengue fever. To address this situation, the WHO has activated a dedicated logistics center, focusing on sending basic medicines and medical supplies, and is preparing to enter the disaster area to provide assistance.
The international community has also actively responded to the aid. The Chinese government has decided to provide 100 million yuan in emergency humanitarian disaster relief to Myanmar and has dispatched two rescue teams carrying tents, blankets, first aid kits, and other materials to the disaster area. US President Trump has stated that he will provide related assistance to Myanmar. In addition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has also activated relevant mechanisms to provide humanitarian assistance.
The first batch of emergency surgical drugs and multi-functional tents have already been sent from Yangon to hospitals in Naypyidaw, and more medical equipment and supplies will continue to arrive in severely affected areas such as Mandalay. The WHO is working with multiple parties to ensure that aid quickly covers the disaster area, reducing the impact of the earthquake on the local population.
In the face of the disaster, the WHO emphasizes that the current priority is to save lives and prevent disease outbreaks. They call on the international community to work together to provide the necessary funds and resources to help Myanmar through this difficult time.
