Reno’s planning commission unanimously approved a conditional-use permit for the Grand Sierra Resort’s proposed 10,000-seat arena, allowing another big step for the casino toward their $1 billion project.

The GSR is negotiating with the Reno Redevelopment Agency, which is comprised of all city council members, on a tax-incremental financing plan that would use public financing to get the project afloat. But the permit is not associated with this funding plan — even if the public financing negotiations don’t pan out, the GSR still has this land-use permit to work with.

The GSR had to apply for a conditional-use permit, since their mixed-use zoning doesn’t specifically allow for arenas or anything above 85 feet.
