The Thai government is actively promoting the plan to establish a comprehensive entertainment center at the Bangkok Port (Khlong Toei Port). The Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, recently stated that he has instructed Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri to set up a committee to assess the feasibility of developing entertainment complexes at multiple locations, including Bangkok Port.
He pointed out that Bangkok Port has vast land and beautiful river views, making it an ideal location for transformation into a yacht marina.
Previously, the Thai Cabinet had approved the new Port Authority of Thailand Act (PAT Act), which provides legal support for establishing an entertainment complex in the Khlong Toei area. This act allows the Port Authority of Thailand to issue bonds, establish companies, make investments, and develop properties that serve the public interest, paving the way for the modernization and commercialization of the port.
However, the government faces some opposition in advancing this project. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated that the government will not rush to legislate the entertainment complex-casino act, emphasizing the need for more time to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of decisions to prevent social conflicts.
Furthermore, the Thai government plans to submit the draft bill for the entertainment complex to the Lower House for consideration on April 9, 2025, aiming to promote tourism and economic development through measures such as legalizing casinos.
In summary, the Thai government is actively pushing forward with the plan to establish a comprehensive entertainment center at Bangkok Port, despite some opposition, but adjustments in related laws and policies have created favorable conditions for the project's implementation.
