Recently, a heartbreaking criminal case occurred in the Philippines, where Chinese community leader Guo Congyuan was unfortunately murdered after being kidnapped, sparking widespread concern across all sectors of Philippine society.
On April 11, Philippine President Marcos Jr. officially issued an order demanding the national police department to conduct a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the kidnapping and murder of Guo Congyuan. The president made it clear that the government will take this case seriously and will not tolerate any violent criminal acts, and the perpetrator must be brought to justice.
Previously, the Philippine police had issued a related bulletin. On April 9, in Roriques Town, Rizal Province, the bodies of Guo Congyuan and his driver were discovered. Preliminary investigations showed that both bodies had obvious signs of external injuries, and the suspected cause of death was strangulation. This tragic scene was shocking and further highlighted the heinous nature of the case.
At the press conference that day, Presidential Communications Secretary Claire Gaston spoke on behalf of the president. He emphasized that the president is highly concerned about this case and has instructed relevant departments to thoroughly investigate the truth, while reiterating the Philippine government's firm resolve to combat violent crimes. "We will not sit idly by in the face of such atrocities; the investigation is proceeding in an orderly and intense manner. The government will use all resources and means to resolutely prevent such vicious incidents from happening again," Gaston said with determination.
The murder of Guo Congyuan has caused a huge uproar in the Filipino-Chinese community. More than ten Chinese associations quickly united to issue a statement, strongly condemning this vicious incident and calling on the government to take more effective measures to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
The statement pointed out: "Mr. Guo Congyuan was not only a successful entrepreneur but also a community leader passionate about public welfare. His murder has not only brought great pain to his family but also poses a serious challenge to social justice and fairness."
Several groups, including the Filipino-Chinese Young Entrepreneurs Association, expressed dissatisfaction with the initial response speed of the government departments involved, citing bureaucratic issues. They strongly urged the government to "speak through actions, not just words," and demanded that the case be handled openly and transparently, with severe punishment for all involved parties and any potential protectors.
The statement further emphasized: "We urgently hope to see the government take swift and decisive law enforcement actions, ensuring that justice is no longer delayed and that society can regain confidence in the rule of law."
National Police spokesperson Jean Fajardo revealed in an interview that investigators are working hard to determine whether Guo Congyuan's murder is related to the offshore gaming (POGO) groups.
She explained that on April 8, a black Lexus LM350 found in the sixth district of Jisun City was confirmed to be the vehicle Guo Congyuan had been riding in before his death. Currently, the police are vigorously tracing the vehicle's route and the possible organizational background involved.
Additionally, Fajardo added, "Witnesses claimed that they saw two men abandoning the car and quickly fleeing the scene near the crime location; we are investigating the identities of these men."
According to police records, Guo Congyuan and his driver lost contact after leaving the office of a steel company in the Greater Manila area on the afternoon of March 29. The next day, the family reported to the police, and considering safety factors, initially requested the police to handle the case discreetly.
This incident has undoubtedly triggered strong public concerns about safety, and how the government handles this case will be an important test of its governance capabilities.
