Philippines' Justice Minister Jesus Crispin Remulla recently made a strong statement, urging former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque to return to the country to face allegations related to human trafficking involving him and over 50 others. Remulla emphasized that these charges are based on solid evidence and are not politically motivated.

According to Philippine media, Remulla stated at a press conference: "If a person is abroad, it naturally becomes difficult to subject them to the investigative processes of the Philippine judiciary. His claims of political persecution are merely a shirking of responsibility."

Roque argued that these legal actions could indeed provide grounds for his political asylum application in the Netherlands, and insisted that he is being persecuted for his loyalty to former President Duterte's camp. However, Remulla countered: "The evidence in the hands of the prosecutors far exceeds the threshold of reasonable doubt, and I am confident in their judgment."

This case originated from a raid in June 2023 at the Lucky South 99 Park in Porac, Pampanga, targeting an illegally operated offshore gambling operator. The investigation revealed illegal detention, forced labor, torture, and confiscation of passports and personal devices at the site, characterizing it as "organized large-scale human trafficking."

At the time, Roque served as the legal advisor to Whirlwind Company, the lessee of the park. Prosecutors pointed out that although Roque was aware of the company's illegal activities, he continued to provide legal support, allegedly covering for the illegal operations.

The Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) has announced that the illegal assets, properties, and profits of those involved will be legally confiscated. Deputy Justice Minister Nicolas Ty revealed that arrest warrants are about to be issued, and once Roque is included on the list, the Justice Department will formally notify the Dutch government of the background of his asylum application.

Although Roque insists he "is not fleeing but merely exercising his legal rights," Philippine officials have made it clear that they will pursue the matter to the end, and will hold the suspects accountable under the law, regardless of their location.
