The latest data from the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, shows that the total turnover for licensed operators in the first quarter of 2024 was SEK 6.61 billion (approximately USD 689 million), a 1% decrease from the same period last year.
Online casinos and betting segments were the most stable, with revenues of SEK 4.28 billion dominating the market, only a slight decrease of 0.2%.
Traditional gambling channels, however, suffered significant losses. National lottery and slot machine revenues fell by 3% to SEK 1.3 billion. More notably, revenue from Casino Cosmopol's brick-and-mortar casinos plummeted by 60%, recording only SEK 26 million—a stark contrast to the pre-pandemic quarterly average of SEK 245 million.
It is noteworthy that with Svenska Spel's recent closure of the last Cosmopol casino, the Swedish gambling market has officially ended an era.
In niche areas, charitable gambling such as lotteries saw a counter-trend increase of 3.5% to SEK 886 million, while hall bingo games (SEK 49 million) and physical gambling (SEK 52 million) remained stable.
Although the report only reflects data from licensed operators, ATG points out that unlicensed gambling sites still hold a significant share in the Swedish market, continuing to exert pressure on the regulated market.
