On July 7, 2025, a major upheaval occurred in Thai politics. The casino legalization bill, which was scheduled to be submitted to the parliament for review this week, was suddenly withdrawn by the government. At the same time, Thailand's political situation plunged into an unprecedented crisis—Prime Minister Pe Tongtan Sinawa was ordered by the Constitutional Court to suspend his duties, and the ruling coalition immediately disintegrated, leaving the national political situation highly uncertain.

According to the ruling party whip Visut, the casino bill was originally planned to be submitted to the parliament for discussion on July 9. The content included the establishment of an "entertainment complex" integrating gambling, hotels, and shopping centers, aimed at attracting foreign investment and boosting the economy. However, after the bill was announced, it immediately sparked widespread social controversy.

The opposition voices mainly focused on three aspects:

Concerns that the legalization of gambling would induce youth addiction and destroy family structures;

Warnings that legal casinos could become hotbeds for money laundering, telecommunications fraud, and illegal immigration;

Criticism that gambling profits might exacerbate wealth disparity, leading to social discontent.

As social pressure continued to escalate, political turmoil also erupted. The Thai Proud Party, originally supporting the government, announced its withdrawal from the ruling coalition in protest against the gambling bill, causing the government to lose majority support in the parliament. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pe Tongtan was also suspended from duty by the Constitutional Court amid a judicial storm over a "moral controversy," involving her private conversation with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, which allegedly criticized the Thai military, causing great dissatisfaction among the military.

Observers believe that the political turmoil triggered by the casino legislation may only be the prelude to a larger crisis. Subsequent legislative processes, including the national budget and key economic bills, may be completely shelved, and the stability of the government faces severe challenges.

Currently, the Thai government has not yet announced a new political direction. It is foreseeable that the legalization of gambling will be completely shelved in the short term, and the direction of Thai politics and economy is entering a critical juncture full of uncertainties.
