The French National Gaming Authority (ANJ) has imposed a fine of 75,000 euros (approximately $87,700) on a licensed online gaming operator for serious breaches of statutory data archiving and availability obligations between 2022 and 2024.
Following an investigation by the ANJ Sanctions Committee, the operator failed to store and provide player and betting data in real-time completely and accurately as required, affecting the regulatory body's effective oversight of the market. The violations included removing millions of euros worth of betting data from the hardware archive system and providing over 900,000 inaccurate or defective data records, leading to ongoing data leakage issues for 25 months.
According to French law, licensed operators must ensure that the ANJ has real-time access to complete and accurate player account and gaming data at all times, to monitor player returns promptly, identify problematic gambling behavior, and ensure the transparency and integrity of gaming operations.
The ANJ noted that such data management failures severely impacted industry transparency and hindered effective actions against fraud, money laundering, and excessive gambling, violating Articles 31 and 38 of the Law of May 12, 2010, and Articles 29 and 30 of the Decree of May 19, 2010.
This penalty is part of ANJ's overall action to strengthen controls against excessive gambling and compliance management in the industry. Recently, ANJ also reviewed the compliance plans of several casinos, with the vast majority being approved, reflecting the regulatory authority's firm commitment to maintaining fairness and safety in the gambling market.
