Philippine police revealed that early Wednesday morning, a 28-year-old Hong Kong Chinese man, Wang Danyu (alias Baolong), was successfully arrested in the waters near Bongao City, Tawi-Tawi Province in the south, marking a key breakthrough in the shocking Makati City hotpot restaurant shooting case and the BGC kidnapping case that shocked the Chinese and Filipino communities.
According to the police, Wang Danyu is suspected of firing multiple shots inside the Xiao Jun Gan Hotpot Restaurant in Makati City on October 17, 2024, killing a 29-year-old Chinese man, Liu, on the spot and then fleeing. The crime scene was bloody and horrific, with surveillance footage showing the entire process, attracting widespread attention. After the incident, Wang was blacklisted by the Philippine immigration, his passport was canceled, and he became a high-priority fugitive.
This operation, codenamed "Dragon Claw," was approved and implemented by the Chief of the Philippine National Police, Nicolas Torre III. The police intelligence unit successfully intercepted Wang Danyu's speedboat off the coast of Tawi-Tawi, preventing him from escaping through an illegal exit route to Malaysia.
Wang is not only suspected in the Makati case but is also suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of a 14-year-old Chinese student in Taguig City in February 2024, as well as a car theft case. Police found 8 shell casings and 5 bullets at the hotpot restaurant scene. Investigations suggest that the shooting motive may involve business disputes or personal grudges, as Liu had communicated with Wang through Telegram before his death, suspecting a conflict arose from failed negotiations over a "corn and rice business."
The case has exposed the underground gangs and violence issues within the Chinese community in the Philippines. The police stated that they would continue to investigate the potential organizations and financial support networks behind Wang.
