To enhance its appeal, the Secretariat of Awards and Betting, under the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, issued Decree No. 1,656/2025 on July 31, adjusting the prize distribution ratios for both regular and special draws of Mega-Sena.
According to the new regulations, the prize money for regular Mega-Sena lotteries has been increased from 35% of the total betting amount to 40%; for the Mega da Virada, held annually on December 31 and known for its substantial prizes, the first prize (matching all six numbers) ratio has been significantly raised from 62% to 90%.
Statistics show that the 2024 Mega da Virada prize exceeded 635 million Brazilian reais (approximately 113.3 million US dollars). With the implementation of the new policy, the 2025 prize is expected to surpass 1 billion reais (approximately 178.5 million US dollars), setting a new historical record.
Meanwhile, to balance the prize structure, some lower-tier prizes have been reduced. In regular draws, the prize ratio for five numbers (quina) has been decreased from 19% to 13%, and for four numbers (quadra) from 19% to 15%; in Mega da Virada, both these prizes have been uniformly reduced to 5%.
Additionally, each regular draw will now reserve 10% of the revenue for the annual special draw (previously 5%), further ensuring the growth of the Mega da Virada prize pool.
