The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has officially launched an online horse racing betting service, allowing players to participate in real-time horse racing betting on Canadian and global tracks through OLG.ca and the OLG app. All bets are placed using a pari-mutuel betting system, which is the only legal form of horse race betting in Canada.
This service is launched in collaboration with Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG), covering the Toronto Woodbine Racetrack and Milton Woodbine Mohawk Park, and is connected to the WEG's HPIbet platform.
OLG's Chief Gaming Officer, Dave Pridmore, stated that this move provides a convenient avenue for online players and supports the sustainable development of the Ontario horse racing industry. WEG's CEO, Michael Copeland, mentioned that this will enhance the player experience and spark new interest in horse racing among the public.
In June this year, Ontario's regulated gambling market achieved a gross gambling revenue (NAGGR) of CAD 306.8 million, showing a year-on-year decline. Online casinos contributed 79%, while sports betting and peer-to-peer poker revenues declined.
Meanwhile, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has issued new guidelines requiring operators to establish player behavior monitoring mechanisms to identify high-risk players and provide timely support, minimizing gambling-related harm.
