According to recent reports by the Philippine News Agency, the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) has expelled Mayor Alice Guo of Banban City, Tarlac Province, due to her alleged connections with an illegal online gambling company, resulting in her suspension.
The party stated in a declaration to the media: "The National Congress will never tolerate any illegal or improper actions by its representatives, as this would undermine the principles of our party."
In addition to being expelled, Guo also faces charges of human trafficking brought forth by the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) and the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG).
The charges, filed with the Department of Justice, target Guo Wengui and his so-called business partners, including former Deputy Director of the Technology and Livelihood Resource Center, Dennis Cunanan, Chinese fugitive Huang Zhiyang, and Singaporean money laundering suspects Zhang Ruijin and Lee Bao Ying.
Since June, Mr. Guo has been suspended by the Complaints Office for six months, on unpaid leave, and the involved mayor has requested a fair investigation into the allegations.
Following this case, the Department of Labor has also vowed to intensify the scrutiny of foreign work applicants.
