The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) has issued a warning that it will shut down or revoke the registration of 21 payment service providers (PSP) if they are found facilitating financial transactions for online gambling or other illegal activities.
Budi Arie Setiadi, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, stated at the Kominfo office in central Jakarta: "We have sent a warning letter to the PSPs to ensure their services do not facilitate transactions for online gambling."
This action is in accordance with Article 35 clause (1) of Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 on the Management of Electronic Systems and Transactions.
Currently, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology oversees 21 PSPs with 42 registered electronic systems.
The service providers who received the warning letter are required to conduct "a thorough and comprehensive internal review/audit of their electronic system services to ensure they are not used for online gambling or any other illegal activities."
Results of the internal review/audit must be submitted to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within seven working days after receiving the warning letter.
Minister Budi Arie stated: "If the results of the review are not received within 7 days, the electronic payment service providers will face administrative sanctions as per the law."
Previously, the Minister had urged all Indonesian National Action Plans (NAP) to cut off access to international internet lines suspected of providing online gambling services.
In Indonesia, all forms of gambling are illegal, and President Joko Widodo has recently reaffirmed that social assistance will not be provided to online gamblers.
