In the Philippines, the "Alice Guo" incident, which is closely followed by the Chinese community, involves Senator Win Gatchalian as a key figure.
Recently, Win Gatchalian spoke to the media about topics such as the impact of banning offshore betting centers on Philippine society, the government's next steps against fake identities, and the attitude of the Chinese community in the Philippines towards the Alice Guo case. Due to the high interest of the Chinese community in related topics, the interview caused a significant reaction after it was published.
When asked why he is actively investigating Alice Guo and opposing offshore gambling, Gatchalian stated that investigating Alice is just a collateral target of the offshore gambling investigation. The main reason is that he believes the social costs generated by offshore gambling far outweigh the benefits to the nation.
The so-called social costs mainly refer to crime. In the investigation of related issues, the case of Alice Guo was uncovered incidentally, not as the initial target. When investigating Guo's relationship with the gambling district, it was discovered that her identity was suspicious and not genuinely Filipino.
Regarding concerns from the Chinese community that his investigation of Alice harms the Chinese in the Philippines, Win Gatchalian stated that he might disturb those who are illegal or fake Filipinos, but those who have obtained Filipino citizenship through legal procedures need not fear anything. Illegal identities like that of Alice Guo will eventually be discovered and cause trouble. Therefore, he believes that those who criticize him might also be staying in the Philippines through illegal means.
For example, he mentioned that the National Bureau of Investigation recently found that 1501 forged birth certificates were issued in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur, 54 of which have been confirmed as illegal. He believes that there will be more such cases in the Philippines, and the government will continue to investigate these issues.
