The Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) announced that it will ask the government for stricter regulations as they fear that the regulation of betting could lead to a decrease in retail trade.
Brazil.- The regulation of sports betting and the expectation of a vote on the legalization of casinos and other gambling games have stimulated the iGaming industry and sectors that can benefit from these activities, such as tourism. However, there are economic sectors that do not share the same enthusiasm, such as the Brazilian retail trade.
According to the media outlet Valor Econômico, the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) announced that it intends to bring representatives to Brasilia to discuss with legislators the implementation of stricter rules for sports betting. The entity fears that iGaming may cause a drop in consumption in retail businesses.
“We are going to meet with the executive board and the advisory council of Abras to move forward more effectively to accelerate the discussion in Brasilia so that we really have limitations on values and advertising. The advancement of betting impacts the whole society, especially the poorest families. We are supporting the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) that defines more restrictions on betting advertising and guiding companies in the sector to adopt a rigorous policy in the selection of marketing agencies and influencers, to be more responsible with this issue,” declared Márcio Milan, vice president of Abras.
According to the mentioned media, Abras and the Commercial Development Institute (IDV) suggest the creation of limitations on the use of credit cards and the release of payroll loans to pay gambling debts. The proposal of the institutions is that these changes be made through the publication of ordinances.
