Australians will no longer be able to use credit cards as a payment method for online betting.
Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) and its members have been staunch supporters of this measure, working with the federal government and the financial services industry to implement this credit card ban since 2021.
Kai Cantwell, CEO of Responsible Wagering Australia, stated that this change is crucial as Australians should gamble only with money they own.
Mr. Cantwell said: "This is an important measure to protect customers, making it easier for people to control their gambling behavior."
"It will complement the safer gambling account management tools currently offered by RWA members.
"RWA and its members support extending this measure to all forms of gambling exempt from the ban, such as lotteries and keno games."
"If consumer protection measures do not apply to all forms of gambling, it will incentivize vulnerable Australians to turn to less regulated types of gambling, where they are more likely to be harmed."
RWA members offer a range of tools to ensure people can gamble safely, many of which have been adopted by the federal government as part of the National Consumer Protection Framework (NCPF).
"The NCPF is expected to undergo evaluation soon, and we look forward to participating in this process to ensure that consumer protection tools are fit for purpose and support a safe and sustainable regulated gambling environment," said Mr. Cantwell.
